Thinning Scissors and Texturising Shears FAQs

Hair thinning scissors have two blades, one with teeth and one without. If you were to take a close look at the blade with teeth on it, you would see small, regularly spaced grooves. Thinning shears are slightly different from texturising scissors. Both thinning scissors and texturising scissors remove hair without losing length or the overall shape of the haircut. The key difference is that thinning scissors primarily remove weight from the hair, alternately, texturising scissors key feature is to add volume and movement to the style. This difference arises because texturising scissors have fewer teeth and have wider gaps between those teeth. This particular design means that they remove more hair than thinning scissors do.
What are thinning scissors
There is a good reason why hair thinning scissors have those evenly spaced grooves. Put simply, the configuration makes it possible to cut less hair from a section than normal hairdressing scissors, however, as with any other scissor type, the use of different techniques will give you a variety of results. When working with thick hair, a barber or hairdresser might use thinning shears to reduce the weight. It is also worth noting that you can use thinning scissors on a variety of hair types when you simply need to soften the edges of the style without losing the overall shape.
how do thinning scissors work
A popular misconception relating to thinning scissors is that they are the tool of lazy hairdressers. Whilst It is certainly true that you can use standard hairdressing scissors to achieve a similarly textured result by cutting in an upwards direction from the ends of the hair, this method is not just very time consuming, but it will also never deliver the perfect finish that thinning scissors do.  Another myth is that you ought to use thinning scissors on curly and wavy hair. Whilst it is often true that curly hair often needs to have weight removed in order to create a desired style, this operation is better achieved by working with layers instead, in fact using thinning scissors on curly hair can result in a ruined curl pattern and and angry client frizzy hair!
Myths about Thinning Scissors
The first thing to note is that the greater the number of teeth or grooves, the more subtle the effect will be. Also, If you are cutting very thick hair, a pair of thinning shears with fewer teeth would get the job done more quickly. On the other hand, when cutting fine hair or when you just want to add additional texture to a style, thinning scissors with more teeth would be best suited for the job.
